Vaishakh Amavasya

Vaishakh Amavasya is considered to be a very pious and spiritually important date in Hinduism. The good deeds done on Amavasya date, such as bathing, meditation, chanting, donation and Shraddha Karma, are considered to be many times more fruitful.

This time Vaishakh Amavasya holds special importance, because it comes in the last phase of summer, when the Sun is in its fierce form. At this time, penance, service and charity purify the soul and the blessings of the ancestors are received. The day of Vaishakh Amavasya is especially considered suitable for the peace of those souls whose Shraddha could not be performed properly.

Importance of Vaishakh Amavasya

Vaishakh Amavasya day is a symbol of restraint, service and penance. Deeds performed with devotion on this day—such as observing silence, bathing in the Ganges, offering offerings to ancestors, and serving the needy—purify the mind and soul. It is mentioned in the scriptures that donations made on this day open the way for happiness, peace and prosperity in the family.

In Sanatan Dharma, the utmost importance of donation on Amavasya day has been given. It is said in Srimad Bhagavad Gita-

Daatvyamiti Yaddanam Diyateinupkarine

(दातव्यमिति यद्दानं दीयतेऽनुपकारिणे।)

Deshe kale ch patre ch taddanam saattvikam smrutam.

That is, the charity which is given without any selfishness, at the right time and to a deserving person, is called Satvik charity.
