In the Sanatan tradition, Amavasya is considered extremely pious. Among them, Sarva Pitru Amavasya has its own special significance. This day is the day of offering tarpan to known and unknown ancestors. On this day, after taking bath in holy rivers, people offer tarpan to their ancestors and feed Brahmins and poor, needy people and pray to Lord Vishnu, the savior of this world, for the salvation of their ancestors.
According to religious beliefs, the offerings and donations made on this day please the souls of all the ancestors of the family. Therefore, on this day, Shradh should be performed for all the ancestors. On this day, there is a provision of performing Shradh for all the known and unknown ancestors. Therefore, those who could not perform Shradh for their ancestors in the 15 days of Shradh Paksha, or those who do not know the death anniversary of their ancestors; all of them can perform Shradh for their ancestors on the holy occasion of Sarva Pitru Amavasya.
On Sarva Pitru Amavasya, offering food to Brahmins and the poor and needy satisfies the souls of the ancestors. This pleases the ancestors and they bless their family members with happiness, prosperity and a healthy life.
Charity has special importance in Sanatan tradition, therefore, while mentioning charity, it has been said in religious texts-
दानेन भूतानि वशी भवन्ति दानेन वैराण्यपि यान्ति नाशम् ।
परोऽपि बन्धुत्वभुपैति दानैर् दानं हि सर्वेव्यसनानि हन्ति ॥
(By charity all creatures come under control, by charity enmity is destroyed, by charity even an enemy becomes a brother and by charity all types of troubles are removed.)
