Significance of Papamochani Ekadashi

The fast of Papamochani Ekadashi is said to be extremely virtuous and destroys all sins. It is mentioned in the scriptures that by observing a fast on this day and worshipping Lord Vishnu and Goddess Lakshmi, all troubles are removed and happiness and prosperity prevail in life.

Devotees who observe this Ekadashi fast with devotion and faith, all their sins are destroyed and they attain the supreme abode. On this day, lighting a lamp in front of the idol of Lord Narayana, performing Abhisheka with Tulsi leaves and Panchamrit, chanting mantras and singing bhajans is considered extremely auspicious. By doing this, not only wealth and grains increase in the house, but happiness, peace and prosperity also remain in the family with the grace of God.

Story about mythical events

The glory of this Ekadashi is described in the Puranas. There is a story in Bhavishya Purana that Medhavi Rishi, son of Chyavan Rishi, was engaged in severe penance. Devraj Indra feared that he might snatch away the kingdom of heaven, so he sent the heavenly Apsara Manjughosha to disturb his penance. The Apsara captivated the mind of the sage with her beauty and sweetness.

After being infatuated for years, when the sage realized that his penance was being disturbed, he felt very remorseful. He worshiped Lord Narayana to get rid of his sins. Then Devrishi Narada advised him to observe the Papamochani Ekadashi fast. Due to the effect of this fast, Medhavi Rishi got rid of all his sins and again adopted the path of penance.

Even if a person gets caught in the web of attachment, but if he takes refuge in Shri Hari with a true heart and observes Ekadashi fast, then he can get free from all his sins and attain spiritual peace.
