Varuthini Ekadashi: Know date, time, Pooja Vidhi and importance of donation

In Hinduism, Ekadashi Tithi is considered very pious. There are two Ekadashis in every month, out of which the Ekadashi of Krishna Paksha of Vaishakh month is called Varuthini Ekadashi. “Varuthini” means “protector”. That is, this Ekadashi fast protects a person from obstacles, sins and troubles of life and helps him attain divine worlds.

This fast is not only a means of self-purification, but is also a powerful medium to get the blessings of Lord Shri Hari. All the sins of the person who keeps the fast of this Ekadashi are destroyed and he attains Vaikuntha Dham.

Mythological significance of Varuthini Ekadashi

The importance of Ekadashi fast is described in detail in the Puranas. It is said that this fast gives man happiness and wealth in this world and salvation in the next world. The Varaha incarnation of Lord Vishnu is worshiped on this day.

The Padma Purana mentions the conversation between Lord Krishna and Yudhishthira. In which Lord Krishna tells Yudhishthira, “Varuthini Ekadashi gives good fortune in this world and the next. Fasting on Varuthini Ekadashi always gives the benefit of happiness and loss of sins. It provides enjoyment and salvation to everyone. By observing the fast of Varuthini, a man gets the fruits of penance of ten thousand years.”

“By staying awake on the night of Varuthini Ekadashi and being immersed in the devotion of Lord Madhusudan, a man gets rid of all his sins and attains the supreme position. Every person must observe the fast of this holy and sin-destroying Ekadashi. Even by reading or listening to the glory of this fast, one gets the benefit of virtue. By performing the rituals of Varuthini Ekadashi as per the rules and regulations, a man gets free from his sins and attains a place in Vaikuntha Dham.”

Method of fasting

The fast of Varuthini Ekadashi starts from the night of Dashami. On this day, one should eat sattvik food at night and remember God. On the day of Ekadashi, take a vow to fast after taking a bath in the morning and worship Lord Vishnu.

In the worship, Tulsi leaves, yellow flowers, Panchamrit and recitation of Vishnu Sahasranama are especially fruitful. Keep fast throughout the day and remember the Lord. Night vigil and Bhajan-Kirtan are extremely virtuous. On the day of Dwadashi, one should break the fast by feeding Brahmins, donating clothes and food.

The glory of donation

In Sanatan Dharma, donation is counted among the highest virtuous acts. Especially the donation done on Ekadashi gives eternal fruits. Donating on Varuthini Ekadashi not only liberates one from the sins of this birth, but also gives auspicious results in the next births. The importance of donation has been explained in detail in various texts of Sanatan tradition. Mentioning the importance of donation, it has been said in Manusmriti-

तपः परं कृतयुगे त्रेतायां ज्ञानमुच्यते ।

(Tapah Param Kritayuge Tretaaya Gyanamuchyate)

द्वापरे यज्ञमेवाहुर्दानमेकं कलौ युगे ॥

(Dwapare yajnamevahurdanamekam kalau yuge.)

That is, penance in Satyuga, knowledge in Treta, yajna in Dwapara and donation in Kaliyuga are the means of human welfare.

Donation done on Ekadashi is as fruitful as penance for thousands of years. It not only awakens the feelings of compassion, kindness and sympathy within us, but also creates an environment of balance and harmony in the society.

Donate on Varuthini Ekadashi

In the Sanatan tradition, donation of food and grains is considered the best. Varuthini Ekadashi, cooperates in the service project of Narayan Seva Sansthan to provide food to the poor, helpless and disabled children.

Varuthini Ekadashi is such a holy occasion, when we can move towards spiritual advancement in our life through service, restraint, devotion and donation. This fast not only teaches us devotion towards Lord Shri Hari, but also awakens sensitivity towards the needy around us.

On this day, if we serve any poor, helpless, hungry, suffering or disabled person with body, mind and money, then this will be the true sadhna of our life.

Jai Shri Hari!
